How to Write a Paragraph in English: Simple Structure with Examples

A paragraph is the basic building block of all English writing. Emails, essays, reports, exam answers and even social media posts are built from paragraphs. If you can write one clear, well-organised paragraph, you can write almost anything.

In this guide, you will learn the simple three-part structure of a good paragraph, how to write each part, useful linking words, complete examples, and the most common mistakes students make.

English paragraph structure: topic sentence, supporting sentences and concluding sentence

What Is a Paragraph?

A paragraph is a group of sentences about one main idea. Most paragraphs in school and exam writing are 5–8 sentences long, or about 80–150 words. When you move to a new idea, you start a new paragraph.

The 3 Parts of a Good Paragraph

1. Topic sentence

The first sentence tells the reader what the paragraph is about. It should be clear and general enough to cover the whole paragraph.

Reading every day is one of the best ways to improve your English.

2. Supporting sentences

These sentences explain and prove the topic sentence. Use reasons, examples, facts or short stories. Usually you need three or four supporting sentences.

First, reading helps you learn new words in context. In addition, you see correct grammar again and again, so it becomes natural. For example, students who read a short English article every day often write more accurately within a few months.

3. Concluding sentence

The last sentence wraps up the idea. It can restate the topic sentence in different words or give a final thought.

Therefore, a small daily reading habit can make a big difference to your English.

Complete Paragraph Examples

Example 1: Opinion paragraph

I believe every student should learn to cook. Cooking is a basic life skill that everyone needs, especially when they move away from home for university or work. It also helps people eat healthier food and spend less money on restaurants. For example, many university students spend a large part of their budget on fast food because they cannot cook simple meals. For these reasons, cooking lessons would be very useful for young people.

Example 2: Descriptive paragraph

Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It sits between the Atlantic Ocean and the famous Table Mountain, which visitors can climb or reach by cable car. In the evening, the sky turns orange and pink as the sun sets over the ocean. Visitors can also enjoy fresh seafood, colourful markets and nearby beaches like Camps Bay. It is no surprise that so many tourists visit Cape Town every year.

Useful Linking Words

  • Adding ideas: also, in addition, furthermore, moreover

  • Giving examples: for example, for instance, such as

  • Showing order: first, second, then, finally

  • Contrast: however, but, on the other hand

  • Result: so, therefore, as a result

  • Concluding: in short, overall, for these reasons

Step-by-Step: How to Write a Paragraph

  1. Choose one main idea. Don't try to cover too much.

  2. Write your topic sentence.

  3. List 3 supporting points as quick notes.

  4. Turn the notes into sentences using linking words.

  5. Add a concluding sentence.

  6. Read it again and check grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Common Paragraph Mistakes

  • No clear topic sentence: The reader doesn't know the main idea.

  • Too many ideas: One paragraph should have one main idea.

  • Repeating the same point: Each sentence should add something new.

  • Very long sentences: Break them into shorter ones.

  • Grammar errors: Check our list of common grammar mistakes.
